At the center of Ancestry's current offerings is a relatively straightforward 14-day free trial, pitched as the gateway to your family history addiction. It grants access to Ancestry’s core features - family tree building, genealogy records, census data, and the much-loved "leaf" hints system (little green nudges that suggest a potential new relative or record). It’s enough to get the engine going, and likely just enough for you to get thoroughly invested before the paywall kicks in.

It’s worth noting: you’ll need to create an account and hand over your payment details to begin. Cancel before the fortnight is up and you’ll avoid charges. Miss the deadline, and you’re looking at a monthly subscription cost somewhere between a gym membership and a streaming service, depending on how international your ancestors tended to be. It’s not outrageously priced, but it’s not pocket change either.

As with most spit-based technologies, it's best not to linger too long thinking about the logistics. At least the tube comes with a cap.

The DNA kit aims to reveal your ethnicity estimates, regional heritage, and potential living relatives. Do not expect to uncover Viking blood and aristocratic titles with surgical precision. Ethnicity estimates change regularly as databases update, sometimes giving users the eerie sensation that their roots are actively rewriting themselves. What You Can (Realistically) Expect To Discover

Ancestry's experience is part puzzle, part rabbit hole. Building a family tree often yields its richest discoveries somewhere between pages 4 and 40 of an 1870s census scan in surprisingly neat handwriting. It's satisfying in the exact way pulling lint out of a dryer vent is satisfying: weirdly tactile, slightly grubby, unexpectedly revealing.

The hints-system is automated and enthusiastic, occasionally to its own detriment. You may slip into long-lost relative tangents involving strangers with similar last names from the wrong continent. Eventually, you learn to be sceptical of anything that seems too convenient. Ancestry offers guidance, but if you’re after documentary rigour, the burden remains very much on you. Is It Worth It?

Ancestry remains the Amazon of genealogy for a reason: it's vast, occasionally clunky, but deeply functional. The polish isn’t always there, and the mobile app lacks the charm (and speed) of its desktop site. Customer service is responsive, though not overly generous - refunds are partial or nonexistent once the DNA kit is used, for obvious reasons. You can’t un-spit.

Still, the experience is undeniably absorbing. Once immersed, most people find themselves spending more time with dusty census scans than they ever expected. The deals and free trials make sense as an entry point - but, just like that surprising 3% Sardinian ancestry, be prepared to come back for more once it’s over.
