Founded in 1984 by John Aspinall - a gambler-turned-conservationist with a penchant for high-risk ventures (wild animal parks, private zoos, card tables) - the foundation has spent decades reintroducing captive-born animals to their native habitats. The store is a sideline, but a functional one. Revenue from sales helps support conservation work, or at least subsidises the cost of looking after large, expensive carnivores on British soil.

The Merch

The product lineup is exactly what you’d expect from an organisation trying to turn goodwill into revenue. There's clothing emblazoned with wildlife imagery (because nothing says "fashion" like publicly aligning yourself with a cause), accessories, homeware, and gifts. The obligatory coffee mug, a retail staple in any cause-driven store, makes an appearance. There are plush animals, too - soft proxies for their endangered real-world counterparts. The three-year-old or the eighty-three-year-old in your life may not need another cuddly tiger, but at least it brings a vague sense of doing something good.

The Aspinall Foundation Store understands an essential truth: people will pay more for things that make them feel virtuous, but they still prefer a discount. The Justification

In the end, it’s a store with a mission. Could you just donate directly and skip the merchandise? Probably. But where’s the fun - or the discount - in that?
