Blurb Inc. Wants to Print Your Photos - But Should It?

Most people print fewer and fewer photos these days. Digital albums sit neglected on cloud storage, social media, or whatever proprietary app came with your phone. But sometimes, pixels aren’t enough. Occasionally, you want a physical book - something you can actually hold, flip through, or leave on the coffee table to suggest, subtly, that you are an interesting, cultured person.

Enter Blurb Inc., a US-based company that promises to make creating and selling custom photo books effortless. The company has a global reach, a decent set of tools, and - perhaps most importantly - reasonable pricing. It’s not the most feature-packed service on the market, nor is it the flashiest. But for most people, it’s probably good enough.

A Name Like BookWright Suggests Craftsmanship. Mostly.

Blurb’s main tool is BookWright, a free app that lets you design professional-looking photo books without specialized knowledge or, frankly, much effort. The interface is packed with templates, frames, and layout options. You can add text, tweak margins, and - critically - remove annoying logos. There’s also an auto-enhance feature that does its best to make your photos look more polished. Results will depend on the quality of your images, of course, but it’s a nice shortcut for the less design-inclined.

The desktop version gives you the most control, though there’s a mobile version for when inspiration strikes on your couch. BookWright works on both iPhone and iPad, pulling images straight from your camera roll or social media. This is convenient, though it does make your carefully curated book slightly dependent on whatever algorithm determines the default order of your photos.

Advanced Tools for the Ambitious (or Just the Stubborn)

For those who take their layouts more seriously, Blurb plays well with Photoshop, Lightroom, and InDesign. You’ll get total control over your book’s look and feel, though this does mean spending more time tinkering. The company also offers trim guides - designed to ensure your images don’t get awkwardly cropped in the printing process - and a range of paper and cover options, should you have strong feelings about matte vs. glossy.

Once your book is designed, you can print copies for yourself or sell them through Blurb’s marketplace. Whether your holiday photos will interest a wider audience is another question entirely, but hey, the option is there.

Discounts, Deadlines, and the Usual Mild Pressure

Blurb runs frequent promotions, including a Refer-a-Friend scheme and the occasional discount window that threatens to close any day now. (At the time of writing, pricing deals are set to expire on December 17.) These offers aren’t industry-shaking, but if you’re planning to order anyway, a small discount never hurts.

As for competition, Blurb holds its own in terms of price and customization. It’s not the only player in the space - far from it - but it strikes a decent balance between user-friendliness and flexibility. If you want highly bespoke photo books with artisanal binding, there are more specialized options out there. If you just want something attractive and well-made, without agonizing over every design detail, Blurb is a solid bet.

The Verdict

Blurb won’t revolutionize photo books, but it doesn’t need to. It offers a straightforward way to make and print a book that looks good on a shelf or in someone’s hands. The tools are intuitive, the pricing is reasonable, and the quality is - within expectations - decent. If you’ve always meant to make a photo book but never got around to it, this could be your nudge. If not, well, those digital albums aren’t going anywhere.
