There’s something quietly reliable about Brewers Fayre, the Whitbread-owned pub-restaurant chain that’s been serving up family meals and middling roasts by the motorway since 1979. It isn’t the trendiest place to eat, or even the most memorable. But in a Britain where a decent Sunday lunch can cost more than your car tax, there’s a kind of understated charm in a place that still offers three meats and unlimited roast potatoes for under a tenner. And yes, it’s all very beige - but at least it’s predictably beige. This spring and summer, Brewers Fayre is leaning into approachable global flavours and recession-friendly prices with a new seasonal menu and a handful of discounts aimed squarely at cash-strapped families, NHS staff, and anyone who likes their lamb kofta served with a side of soft play.

Value, Yes. Culinary Revelation, Probably Not.

The headline act right now is their new summer menu. Billed as a "journey around the world", the offering includes spicy Korean chicken burgers, burrito bowls, Lebanese-style lamb koftas, and a rather optimistic Bombay veggie burger. It’s culinary tourism as imagined by a committee who’ve seen an episode of MasterChef and thought, "We could do that, but with a Heinz drizzle."

Still, for £10.99, expectations are appropriately managed. The lamb kofta is passable, if a little timid on the seasoning. The melt-in-the-middle fish pie fishcake is exactly as it sounds: fish in breadcrumb form, with a creamy core that’s either comforting or confusing, depending on your stance on fish-based surprises. "We’re not reinventing the wheel here," says Tom Holloway, a chef with 15 years’ experience in UK pub chains. "But for the price point, you’re not exactly expecting Ottolenghi."

The Deals: Sometimes Surprisingly Decent

Price is where Brewers Fayre makes its pitch. The new "Feed the Family for £15" offer (two adult mains and two children’s meals, weekdays 12–6pm until 25 April) is genuinely competitive, especially with kids' meals normally priced from £4.99. There’s also a £5 lunch menu - gammon, sausage and mash, or fish and chips - available Monday to Friday. For budget-conscious parents trying to make half-term tolerable, it’s not a bad proposition.

Sunday roasts start at £10.99, or £4.99 for kids. There’s a £1 surcharge for bottomless Yorkshires and potatoes, which feels both generous and slightly chaotic in concept. (There’s something very British about unlimited roast potatoes being the big weekend upsell.) Add in a limited-time KitKat® sundae - vanilla ice cream, crushed KitKat, chocolate sauce - for under a fiver, and you’ve got a sugar-fuelled meltdown just waiting to happen in the car park.

Discounts are politely targeted. NHS staff and students get 25% off food from Monday to Friday, applied with a valid ID or Blue Light card. It’s simple, clear, and unobtrusively generous, unlike some chains that bury their offers behind apps and loyalty schemes that never quite work at checkout.

Kids, Soft Play, and the Business of Distraction

Brewers Fayre has also leaned into the soft play model at several locations - Pirnhall Inn, Bobbing Apple and Royal Quays among them - where £4.50 secures 90 minutes of distraction while you eat something vaguely inspired by Beirut. A two-week play pass is £8, which works out to 57p a day if you’re the kind of parent who measures preschooler entertainment on a cost-per-minute basis. "You’re not coming here for the ambience," says marketing analyst Rachel Evans. "You’re coming here because the kids are occupied, and you don’t have to cook."

Fizzy Offers, Measured Expectations

The drinks menu is also running a low-key charm offensive. There’s a "2 for £12" cocktail offer all day, every day. Don’t expect mixology - this is syrup-forward, fruit-coloured fun. Meanwhile, four beers for £12 and fizz offers (£5 off Sette Bello prosecco on weekends after 5pm) are clearly designed to keep the grown-ups vaguely cheerful while the kids attack the indoor climbing frame. It’s booze-as-distraction, reasonably priced and served in glasses that won’t break.

A Safe, Affordable Middle Ground

Brewers Fayre is not a destination. It’s not really trying to be. But in 2025, with inflation still nibbling at the average family’s grocery bill and "dining out" sounding more like an economic strategy than a treat, there’s something to be said for a restaurant that delivers exactly what it promises: familiar food, reasonable deals, and enough beige to calm even the most overstimulated toddler.

It’s unlikely you’ll remember your visit. That might be the point.
