Nothing in life is free, except, occasionally, a tiny tube of toothpaste or a miniature bottle of shampoo. The world of free samples is an interesting place - part marketing exercise, part consumer experiment, part treasure hunt for the mildly patient. For NHS staff and keyworkers, there’s an additional angle: a small nod of appreciation from brands that want to be seen doing the right thing. It’s not a pay rise (sorry), but a free coffee from Costa or a bottle of Nivea hand cream is, at the very least, something you won’t have to buy this week.

Most of these offers follow a similar pattern. Big brands - think L’Oréal, Gillette, or even M&S - hand out trial-sized versions of their latest products in the hope that you’ll be impressed enough to pay full price later. Sometimes it’s a skincare sample, sometimes a snack bar, sometimes a free Greggs sausage roll (after all, people need sustenance). Occasionally, the offers stray into the oddly specific - free energy drinks during a ‘keyworker appreciation’ promo, for example, because nothing says ‘thank you’ like 200mg of caffeine.

Of course, there’s a process. You usually sign up, hand over an email address (that will soon be full of ‘exclusive offers’), and, if all goes well, wait for a parcel that may or may not arrive. Some brands make you work for it - filling out surveys, proving your eligibility, or engaging in some mild social media promotion. Whether that effort is worth a sachet of shampoo is a question only you can answer.

That’s not to say freebies aren’t worth your time. Over a year, the savings can add up - free meal deals from supermarkets, trial-size beauty products that last a few weeks, the occasional free streaming subscription. And if you were going to buy it anyway, getting one for free isn’t exactly a loss. Just don’t expect miracles. Discounted cinema tickets are great, but a free house? Unlikely.

So if you like the idea of getting small, useful things without paying for them, this section is worth a glance. You won’t replace your weekly shop with freebies, but you might, every now and then, open your post to find a pleasant surprise. Or, at the very least, a politely worded marketing email reminding you to ‘buy full-size now’ - which you can, of course, ignore.
