For a retailer built on nostalgia, Clinton Cards has been surprisingly - if quietly - resilient. Established in 1968, the greeting card chain has spent more than 50 years selling sentiment in paper form. The stores themselves are an exercise in reliability: bright lighting, neatly packed shelves, and, inevitably, a display of oversized, pun-laden birthday cards. If you need something - anything - to mark an occasion, Clinton’s will have it.

"People still like the ritual," says Andy Webb, personal finance expert and bargain hunter. "It’s one thing to send a text, but a card? That’s effort. And people appreciate effort." Clinton Cards has built its business around this premise, selling cards for events ranging from the obvious (Christmas, Valentine’s) to the hyper-specific (Grandparents' Day, Boss’s Day).

The Discounts - If You Qualify

Clinton Cards isn't oblivious to modern spending habits. It regularly rolls out deals - discount codes, seasonal promotions, and multi-buy offers - because, let’s be honest, greeting cards have entered the "nice to have" rather than "must have" category for many.

Keyworkers and students get additional perks. The former, depending on verification, can claim exclusive discounts on purchases. Students, thanks to Clinton’s partnership with the usual discount networks, can knock a percentage off their total - an arguably sensible move, given that most students aren't budgeting for luxury paper products. "We know people are looking for value," says a Clinton spokesperson. "We want to make sure they can still celebrate life's moments."

The Digital Pivot - Better Late Than Never

Traditional retail has struggled in the last two decades, and Clinton’s is no exception. In 2012, the chain collapsed into administration, only to be rescued by American Greetings, a US-based card manufacturer. Since then, it's fought to stay relevant. The inevitable shift online has allowed customers to browse and buy from their sofas - without being tempted by scented candles near the till.

The website offers convenience, but it also highlights a fundamental challenge: why order a physical card when an e-card or a WhatsApp message costs nothing? Webb puts it bluntly: "If you're going online anyway, why not just send something digital?"

Despite the existential questions, Clinton Cards perseveres. There’s still a market for physical cards, albeit a shrinking one. And for those who prefer the tangible to the virtual, who still believe in handwritten notes over GIFs, Clinton’s is there - at least for now.
