Trying to optimise your sleep is, by now, a minor middle-class pursuit - a sort of soft-focus arms race. Weighted blankets, cooling mattresses, apps that claim to listen to your dreams. None of these are inherently bad, but the basics still matter: duvet not too lumpy, pillow not too brick-like, sheets not actively hostile to your skin. It's the kind of quiet domestic grubwork that rarely goes viral on TikTok, but happens to affect how human you feel by morning.
Cuddledown, a UK-based bedding company of the soft and earnest variety, isn’t exactly reinventing sleep. What it is doing - at least for now - is knocking up to 50% off its stock in a warehouse clearance sale. The timing coincides with the Bank Holiday, which, depending on your mood, might feel either like destiny or adequately convenient. Either way, there are some decent savings to be had if your current pillow smells faintly of regret.
The sale includes a decent cross-section of Cuddledown’s offerings: down-filled duvets, cotton mattress protectors, linen bedding sets, and storage bags resembling overfed marshmallows. There’s no obvious gimmick to the branding. The designs skew hotel-classic (almost aggressively white), and the materials are pitched - whether rightly or not - as premium.
The Pure Hungarian Goose Down Duvet is one of their flagship products. It's discounted now from £325 to £227 for a king size, which is still not what you’d call buy-on-a-whim territory. But then again neither is heat-induced insomnia. This duvet has the reassuring fluffiness of a cloud that’s been to finishing school - plush yet not overpowering. Feather leakage is minimal, at least early on. Returns are free within 30 days, which is useful if you find goose down makes you feel existentially itchy.
Then there’s the Pure Cotton Mattress Protector, now £47 down from £64. A best seller, possibly because many of us only realise we need one when it’s too late. Unlike its plasticky waterproof cousins that trap heat like a greenhouse, this version breathes. Several reviewers report genuine surprise at waking without mild night-sweat regret. Not life-changing, just quietly functional. Not unlike the people who buy these things.
There’s also a range of Duvet Storage Bags on offer, most under £30 now. These aren’t sexy. But they are cotton, zip neatly, and don’t scream "student flatshare in crisis". One customer likened hers to a Mary Poppins bag. It’s either testimony to the generous storage capacity or to how few things we trust with houseguest duvets anymore. Probably both.
Shipping is a flat £4.95, or free if you’re spending over £50 - which is fairly easy to do, unless you live in a minimalist shack designed by an architect with sleep apnea. Orders generally arrive in a week, though Bank Holidays may add friction. Returns are free within 30 days and processed without fuss, assuming your cat hasn’t already adopted the £200 duvet as its moral right.
Cuddledown isn’t a disruptor brand. It's more like an old friend who recently learned about breathable cotton. The current sale is worth a look if your bedding is showing signs of wear - pilling, flattening, or taking on odours that no longer wash out. Just don’t expect a miracle wrapped in 300-thread-count Egyptian cotton. You’ll get comfort, perhaps even delight, but mostly you’ll be sleeping on a sensible improvement you probably should’ve made months ago. And in the end, that’s not a bad dream.
