Owning a car in a UK city isn’t so much a lifestyle choice these days as it is a balancing act between throwing money into a pit and figuring out where to park the pit - without incurring a fine. The rise of car-free living isn’t just about tree-hugging or TikTok minimalism anymore; it’s mostly practicality wrapped in the thin veneer of eco-conscious self-justification. Which is where services like Enterprise Car Club roll onto the scene, promising the trappings of vehicle ownership without the cloying permanence or annual MOT-related anxiety dreams.
Enterprise Car Club isn’t new to the vehicle-sharing circuit, but it’s one of the more robust, widespread options for those who need occasional wheels. With a self-aware promise of "Rental That’s Right Up Your Street," the service allows members to unlock cars and vans using an app - no keys, no counter queues, no small talk with Trevor in the high-vis vest. The vehicles are parked in everything from train stations to anonymous kerbside bays in cities across the UK. As of January 2025, there are over 1,300 of them nationwide.
Pricing is mostly what you’d expect, with rates starting at around £7.50 per hour or £44 per day for a "small" car - though, in practice, "small" often translates to post-2008 Vauxhall Corsa. Mileage fees and regional variations apply, obviously, and none of this includes the psychic cost of trying to parallel park on that one terrifying side street in Islington. If you’re the sort of person who reads footnotes, do note that these quoted rates are for the standard plan, and they don’t account for mileage, which sits at 23p per mile for most fuel types. Not extortion, but it adds up fast if you’re planning a Bank Holiday pilgrimage to Margate.
Enterprise’s process leans on the familiar modern trilogy: app, location pin, QR code. You join online (plans start at about £60/year unless you dig up a fairly unobtrusive discount code - of which there are often a few floating around), reserve a vehicle through the app, then walk over and unlock it with your phone. That’s genuinely it.
The cars tend to be functional rather than aspirational, but most are clean and surprisingly modern inside. Occasionally, you’ll encounter the unmistakable scent of past journeys (a combination of Greggs wrappers and air freshener that smells like both pine and surrender), but nothing you’d write a letter about. Vans are available too, if you’re moving house, picking up flat-pack furniture that won’t fit in a cab, or pretending your freelance media business needs heavy-duty transport.
One obvious appeal: you only pay when you drive. Fuel is included (just don’t run it low and ignore the refill card in the glovebox), and so is maintenance, insurance, and breakdown cover. You’re not paying to keep a car garaged for the weeks you don't use it, which - assuming you aren’t a daily driver - can be financially grounding if not exactly thrilling. It's car access with a side of monetary realism.
There are downsides. Vehicle availability varies wildly depending on your postcode. In major cities, you might have multiple options within 15 minutes’ walk. In outer suburbs or smaller towns, you might find the only car within range has been booked since last Wednesday by someone who seems to live inside it. Customer service is generally decent, but not superpowered - expect a human callback within 24 hours, not magical chatbot tweaked to answer philosophical queries about your malfunctioning Fiesta.
Enterprise does offer occasional deals, especially for new sign-ups or via corporate tie-ins. Professionals in the "grey fleet" (basically, people using their own cars for work) may find that their employers have discount schemes in place, which can knock a few pounds off membership or offer free trial months. Keep an eye out for voucher codes - Enterprise isn’t one of those relentlessly tweeting discount empires, but partners occasionally slip promo rates or trial plans under the radar, especially for those who don’t mind sacrificing a little data for a cheaper weekend trip.
Refunds and cancellations are largely pain-free if handled through the app, with full refunds as long as you cancel at least five hours before your booking starts. It’s one of the few areas where procrastination isn’t advisable.
This isn’t a service for everyone. If you routinely move antique furniture, take spontaneous trysts to rural Scotland, or fantasise about sports cars with questionable carbon footprints, then yes, you’ll be disappointed. But if you’re a city dweller tired of watching your second-most-expensive possession depreciate outside your flat, Enterprise Car Club is quietly compelling.
It won’t make driving better. But it might make it optional - and in 2025, that could be revolutionary enough.
