No one really "plans" travel anymore in the way we used to. The dreamy scrapbook of brochures and Michael Palin reruns has given way to tab juggling, price sliders, and last-minute voucher code redemptions. A holiday in 2025 is less about discovery and more about negotiating between your annual leave, your budget, and your tolerance for airport queues. And that’s where brands like First Choice come in - offering a bundle-it-yourself package holiday model aimed at the modern, mildly exhausted consumer.

What Is First Choice Actually Offering?

First Choice is no scrappy newcomer. This is a brand with more than 30 years in the package holiday business, currently sitting under the wider TUI umbrella - a parent company with the sort of corporate heft that makes booking a holiday slightly less nerve-wracking. Their Trustpilot rating is 4.3, which in online review terms is the equivalent of "nobody’s perfect, but they try". You’re not booking with a botched booking engine cobbled together in a basement.

The current pitch is refreshingly utilitarian. You can secure a holiday with a £30 per person deposit, and they’re waving goodbye to admin fees, which - let’s face it - mostly exist to make you feel like you’re being penalised for trying to go on holiday in the first place. There’s also their "Flex" add-on, which allows you to cancel up to 48 hours before departure. In the risk-averse mood of post-pandemic travel, that’s not nothing.

Value, Not Vapour

First Choice’s latest approach is less glossy postcard, more "you do you". You want to add a weather guarantee? Fine. Bags, transfers, excursions? You pick. Want to leave them out and just disappear to a beach for seven days in radio silence? Also fine. There’s a certain IKEA logic to the business model: you build it, you live with it. Or, as consumer travel analyst Maya Patel puts it, "They’re letting travellers do the legwork, but with support rails. It’s a hybrid between DIY and full-service."

There are NHS and student discount codes floating around, and while these won’t transform an off-peak Algarve getaway into a luxury Maldives break, they make a noticeable dent. More interesting is the light editorial-style content emerging from their "Insiders" programme - a crop of travel creators who share low-key, local recs rather than Instagram thirst traps. It’s a gesture toward authenticity that doesn’t feel entirely cynically engineered.

The Not-So-Fine Print

The flight-free options are a nice idea in a post-carbon-guilt age, but the practical range is exactly what you’d expect: think Euro trains to Paris, not slow boats to Santorini. Flexibility has its limits here, too. The more you tweak and add, the more the "value" narrative starts to dissolve into a fairly standard package price. At a certain point, you’re just building a TUI holiday with extra paperwork.

Still, the absence of aggressive upselling is notable. First Choice doesn’t seem interested in coercing you into spa treatments you don’t want or surprise "resort fees" you didn’t see coming. As travel journalist Robyn Grant puts it, "They’re not pretending this will change your life. It’s just a well-priced break with fewer gotchas."

Bottom Line

First Choice isn’t chasing wanderlust. It’s chasing convenience. Their offering is structured, mildly customisable, and probably better suited to people who want a holiday, not a transformation. The deals are solid - especially if you’re booking early and know what kind of holiday you want without 23 browser tabs of comparison sites.

If you’re the kind of traveller who colour-codes itineraries and packs Imodium "just in case," First Choice might be your low-drama holiday enabler. It won’t make your Instagram sparkle, but it might keep your blood pressure down. And in this era of travel chaos, that’s worth more than a free welcome cocktail.
