Of course, "upgrades" here are often relative. One person's game-changing solar battery is another’s shrug-inducing battery saver. It’s a reminder that progress in the G-Shock universe moves at the pace of tectonic drift - with good reason. If it’s already bulletproof, why change the shell?

The Value Proposition, Such As It Is

G-Shock keeps an unusually wide price latitude for a single brand. The classic models like the DW-5600 or GA100 hover around £50-£100 - prices that make them approachable for nearly anyone who needs a car dashboard slapped on their wrist. On the other end, models like the MRG series inch toward four figures, wrapped in titanium and often mystifyingly overengineered. The quirks scale with the cost. And yes, the £800 GMW-B5000 with Bluetooth and solar power will absolutely survive your hiking trip. Whether it needs to is a separate question.

Fashion Statement or Field Tool? Yes.

G-Shock has always straddled the line between functional gear and bold accessory. They’re arguably too large for most shirt cuffs and have historically been immune to minimalist trends. Yet their unapologetic bulk has made them appealing in fashion cycles that favor utility chic - think techno goth or Y2K core. Limited editions (themed for everything from scuba diving to streetwear collabs) drop regularly, adding a layer of artificial scarcity to watches designed to outlive humans.

Still, there’s honesty in that design. G-Shocks aren’t pretending to be elegant or delicate. They’re intentionally overbuilt, sometimes cartoonishly so. Wearing one is making a statement - not so much "I have arrived" as "I might fall down a mountain later." And for a lot of people, that’s enough.

Verdict: Dependable, If a Bit Loud

The G-Shock line, in all its sprawling, slightly chaotic glory, is a reliable answer to over-complication. It tells time. It takes a beating. And through it all, it works - as a tool, as a collectible, and as a cultural oddity that's as likely to be found on a soldier’s wrist as on a runway in Tokyo.

It won’t charm watch snobs, and it certainly won’t replace your smartwatch. But it wasn’t built to. Casio’s own marketing calls it "The Toughest Watch of All Time" - and while that may sound like overstatement, it’s only slightly exaggerated. For a £99 chunk of plastic and steel that you can run over with a truck, the watch world could do a lot worse. Just don’t expect it to tell you your heart rate. Or fit under your cuff.
