SEBO: The Boringly Brilliant Option

SEBO, a brand founded in Germany in 1977 and still manufacturing in Velbert, has a cult following among those who consider reliability a feature rather than a tagline. It’s widely used by hotel chains, professional cleaners - and people who've grown tired of replacing cordless vacuums after 18 months.

"It’s a vacuum you buy when you’ve stopped believing in Instagram," says independent appliance engineer Lee Stephenson. "Not exciting. Just solid." If that sounds like damning with faint praise, it’s not.

Dyson: The Price of Prestige

Contrast that with the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute Cordless Stick Cleaner. It’s priced at £699 (when in stock), delivers a respectable 60 minutes of runtime, and includes laser dust detection - a feature both genuinely useful and somehow vaguely shaming. The V15 will show you, in lurid green light, just how dusty your floor actually is. A sort of middle-class horror film, playing out in real-time.

Dyson’s history is better known: a British design juggernaut turned multinational manufacturing octopus, increasingly shifting operations abroad - though still riding high on its 'innovator' brand halo. The products work well, though at nearly double the price of some Shark or SEBO models, you are paying for more than just suction.

Still, Dyson's cult following isn't entirely unwarranted. The Gen5Detect (£749, currently MIA from stock) boasts a 70-minute runtime, HEPA filtration, and a digital display that looks like it belongs in a Tesla dashboard. You’ll pay dearly for it, but then again, some people do like their vacuums to talk back.

Shark vs. Vax: The Value Tier Rumble

For those who want solid performance without re-mortgaging their flat, Shark remains the dependable pick in the mid-tier game. The Shark Anti Hair Wrap Upright NZ801UK (£237, currently out of stock - a recurring theme) is a well-reviewed workhorse with a powered lift-away feature. It’s the sort of thing you buy when your dog is shedding, your toddler is destructive, and you just want the living room to survive until Friday.

Vax, meanwhile, has refocused on carpet washers - useful if your home contains more beige than it should. The Vax CDSW-MPXP SpotWash Home Duo (£179.99) is compact, functional, and doesn’t overpromise. It’s not exactly thrilling, but it’s more effective than blotting with kitchen roll. There's a kind of dignity in that.
