Travel insurance occupies a strange place in our collective imagination - somewhere between sunscreen and a fire extinguisher. It’s not exciting to buy, and if you’re lucky, you’ll never need it. But skip it, and suddenly you’re Googling "emergency evacuation cost Sardinia" in a hotel lobby with very bad Wi-Fi. Go Travel Insurance, offered in partnership with the AXA group (who you may know from… being huge and European), aims to provide a mid-range travel insurance experience that feels neither wildly overpriced nor suspiciously cheap. On balance, it just about succeeds.

What It Offers (and What It Doesn’t)

Go Travel Insurance falls into the category of well-known, sensible travel insurance brands. It doesn’t dangle too many "free" perks or throw you lines about "adventure-ready peace of mind." Instead, you get two product types - Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip - and two pricing/coverage tiers: Standard and Premier. Everything else is basically a branching bush of small print.

Both plans offer basic coverage: cancellation (up to £1,000 on Standard, £3,000 on Premier), emergency medical expenses (between £2 million and £5 million depending on your plan), and modest baggage protection. As policy documents go, Go Travel is relatively straightforward - though, predictably, the Premier tier offers the kind of extra elbow room you'd want if you're jetting off more than once a year, or if you routinely check bags filled with something more valuable than swimwear and mild regrets.

Winter sports cover is optional - worth considering if you ski occasionally but don’t want to be penalised year-round. Over 125 leisure activities are included as standard, which is generous, though the list includes relatively tame pursuits like hot air ballooning and "light hiking," so don’t expect heli-skiing levels of risk indulgence. It's a bit like being told you're free to help yourself… to anything on the vegetarian buffet.

COVID-19: Yes, It’s Still in the Fine Print

Coverage related to COVID-19 and future pandemic events seems thorough - at least, as thorough as it gets in 2025 without someone physically dragging you out of the airport. You’re protected if you fall ill abroad or can’t travel due to a positive test. You’re not covered if you ignore FCDO advice, forget to pack a test result or are caught short by a sudden red list announcement. Translation: you’re expected to act like an organised adult, which seems fair.

That said, there’s a predictable wall of exclusions if your trip is impacted by sudden government rules, lockdowns or flight bans. These are now considered "your problem," barring some exceptions for Premier customers. The policy seems to take the stance that unpredictable global events can't be insured against indefinitely - which is either fair, pessimistic, or just the actuaries regaining control.

Ease of Use and the Claims Experience

There are no flamboyant apps or futuristic claim chatbots here. You’ll call a phone number (0330 123 5172) during business hours and wait your turn. They are upfront that claim turnaround time is not exactly express - particularly in "unprecedented times," which always seem to be the current times. Still, documentation requirements are laid out clearly, and Go Travel, to its credit, seems to work under the assumption that most customers aren’t trying to game the system over a cancelled city break.

Refund guidance is refreshingly blunt: travel providers should refund you first. Don’t take a voucher unless you like future complications. And if your airline’s gone bust and you’ve chosen the Premier tier, you might actually be okay - as long as you've already tried all the usual suspects (ATOL, your card provider, etc). It’s not generous, but it’s honest.

Pricing and Offers: Nothing Flashy

Go Travel doesn’t shout about deals or codes - this isn’t a "20% off today only" kind of insurance. Prices vary widely depending on age, destination, duration and add-ons, so your best bet is to run a quote directly on their site. Single trip policies for UK residents start modestly (a few pounds a day), while Annual Multi-Trip plans are potentially good value if you travel often and don’t want to shop around every time you fly.

There aren’t many flashy coupon codes floating around, and seasonal discounting doesn’t seem to be Go Travel’s style. This is less "Black Friday" and more "respectable winter coat bought in March." Sensible, a little dull - and ultimately, probably what you want from a company managing your worst-case scenario abroad.

Who It’s For

If your idea of travel insurance isn’t a lifestyle decision, but more of a box to tick en route to the departure gate, Go Travel might be precisely what you need. It doesn’t offer bespoke concierge services. It won’t text your mum to reassure her if you sprain your ankle in Lisbon. But it does provide enough coverage structure, clarity and adult supervision to justify its place on your packing list - especially if you opt for Premier and travel more than once a year.

Ultimately, Go Travel Insurance is for practical people who want solid coverage with as little drama as possible. Just the way most insurance - and travel, frankly - ought to be.
