Somewhere between your third Nespresso pod of the day and the slow, creeping guilt about landfill waste, you may have started to wonder: isn’t there a better way to caffeinate? Not necessarily cheaper, not necessarily faster, but at least marginally less planetary doom-inducing? Grind would like to have a quiet word. The East London-based coffee brand has been running cafés while steadily evolving into a full-blown caffeine ecosystem: one-part sustainable mission, one-part subscription service, and one-part limited-edition collaborations you don’t totally hate yourself for liking.

The Pitch

Grind wants you to stop using standard Nespresso pods (those shiny aluminium shells with a lifespan that could outlast some species) and switch to theirs: fully home-compostable alternatives that, crucially, don’t taste like an afterthought. They’re offering 60 pods plus a limited-edition "Clueless" tin - yes, as in Cher Horowitz - for £10.46 with a 25% discount on your first coffee pod subscription. The pods work in original Nespresso machines (not Vertuo), come in a variety of blends, and land on your doorstep with typical UK shipping within 2–4 days. It’s very much the "I suppose this is what being a functioning adult looks like now" kind of upgrade.

The Product

Grind’s pods are compostable in your council’s food waste bin - assuming your council isn’t still figuring out what compostable means - which is a step forward from conventional aluminium pods, the kind that tend to hang around in oceans and landfills with suspicious resilience. Taste-wise, they lean toward accessibility. The House Blend is a crowd-pleaser: smooth, not fussy, the kind of coffee that doesn’t ask you to have opinions about Ethiopian single origin notes before 8 a.m. Variants like Light, Dark, and Decaf round out the line-up, each more palatable than distinctive, frankly - but sometimes good enough is just fine.

The Price

A subscription starts at £13.95/month for 30 pods - with free shipping and a reusable storage tin. Compare that to £16.50 for a similar Nespresso pack (non-compostable, no tin, and typically no fanfare). You can skip, pause, or cancel your subscription whenever you like, which feels less like a sales tactic and more an acknowledgment that attention spans are fickle and inboxes are full. Refills of beans and ground coffee start from £16.95, and for those going full barista-mode, there’s a Grind Two pod machine at £295 - likely overkill for anyone who hasn’t already considered installing a puck knock box in their kitchen.

The Gimmick (That’s Actually Not Bad)

The current hook is a Clueless-themed tin, pink and plaid and oddly charming for something that holds caffeine capsules. It’s a limited-edition clash of millennial nostalgia and eco-conscious adulthood, which makes it sound twee - but then again, it’s functional and free. That might be all the justification you need before tossing it into an online order you barely remember placing.

The Sustainability Bit (With Receipts)

For each product sold, Grind claims to recover ocean-bound plastic. They quantify it - 2,400kg in 2025 so far - which gives it some weight beyond the usual corporate green-speak. They've even spun up the Better Coffee Foundation, a charity initiative that aspires to clean up the coffee industry’s back-end mess. Whether that’s impact or optics depends on your level of cynicism, but the packaging is minimalist, the carbon offsets appear real, and you can compost the pods without an industrial service. Realistically, that puts them ahead of most kitchen drawer miscellanea.

The Verdict

Grind isn’t reinventing coffee. It’s not luxury, it’s not artisanal in the hold-the-brew-for-four-minutes sense. But it is consistent, fairly priced, and easier on the conscience than most competitors. It’s also unmistakably aimed at someone who feels both minor shame about their latte habit and zero time to deal with change. Think of it as coffee for people who read ingredients, sometimes compost, and most importantly - need another reason to technically justify yet another subscription.

There are better-tasting cups out there, sure - but few as low-effort, decently eco-friendly, and gently self-aware. And let’s be honest: having a tin that quotes Clueless in your cupboard might not change your life. But it won’t make it worse either.
