It probably hasn’t escaped your attention that getting rid of old junk isn’t what you’d call a galvanising experience. It’s a chore - rarely urgent, always annoying, and endlessly easy to put off. Whether you've just torn out the avocado-green bathroom tiles or finally admitted the spare room isn’t "full of useful things" but actually "full of actual rubbish," at some point you have to deal with it. That makes you the target market for HIPPO. They don't promise joy, magic or transformation. They promise to take your rubbish away - quietly, competently, and at a price that doesn’t make you mutter under your breath. Which is probably what you were hoping for.

Meet the HIPPOBAG: You Fill, They Fetch

HIPPO’s main offer is the HIPPOBAG. It's a simple idea done fairly well: light, foldable bags in three sizes (MIDIBAG, MEGABAG, and HIPPOSKIP) delivered to your door. You fill one with whatever no longer sparks joy - bricks, broken IKEA chairs, that one terrifying garden gnome - and schedule a collection. Then someone comes and takes it away. Like bin night, but with fewer arguing foxes.

Currently, there's 20% off their bag-and-collection bundles via the code 'MAY20', which brings the entry-level MIDIBAG bundle down from around £144 to closer to £115, depending on location. Not excessively cheap, but not unreasonable either - especially when you factor in the alternative (you, a rental van, and endless half-sincere apologies for dinging a neighbour’s gatepost).

Delivery is free and pretty prompt - usually 1-2 working days. Collections are arranged online or over the phone, and while some customers note the odd missed slot, HIPPO seems to fix things quickly. Refunds are offered within 14 days, provided the bag is unused and still folded up like origami with commitment issues.

Of Men and Vans and Lifting Regret

For heavier or awkward jobs, there’s the Man and Van service - essentially two actual humans turning up, lifting things you’d prefer not to talk about, and tidying up on the way out. Pricing depends on volume, but think of it as a premium offering with the notable benefit of you not slipping a disc. It’s functional, punctual, and about as glamorous as watching someone scrub grout - which, incidentally, is exactly what's happened before they arrive.

Despite the competent execution, it’s not magic. If your waste is behind a series of locked gates, down a muddy embankment, or hidden beneath a stack of increasingly irate cats, you’ll need to make arrangements. This isn't a teleportation service. But it's better than trying to convince your mate with a Nissan Micra that "it’ll probably fit."

Skip Hire, Without the Kafkaesque Permits

Skip hire via HIPPO is... skip hire. Not life-changing, but easier than navigating your local council’s website at 10pm. HIPPO can handle permit applications and logistics, which is worth it if you’re knee-deep in plasterboard and existential dread. Pricing is region-dependent – Londoners, as usual, pay more – and skips are limited to 14 days unless otherwise arranged. The driver will not, as one exuberant customer put it, "take a quick look at the garden fence post as well." Focused services, after all.

Good For the Planet (Mostly)

Since launching in 2002, HIPPO has leaned increasingly into its eco-friendly credentials. The claim: over 95% of waste is diverted from landfill, and the company turned "carbon neutral" in 2023, which involved fleet upgrades and carbon offsetting. You might not feel like David Attenborough just for clearing out your rotting decking, but at least HIPPO isn't simply binning it all at sea and whistling innocently.

They work with regulated Waste Transfer Stations, and from a regulatory standpoint, HIPPO complies with the Environment Agency’s moody requirements. No burning tyres in a layby. No sending your old futon on a one-way trip to a Welsh hedgerow. Again - functional, not euphoric.

Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Use HIPPO

If you’re clearing out a shed, remodelling a kitchen, or simply defeated by the household gremlins of toddlerhood, HIPPO is a thoughtful way to outsource the headache. It sits somewhere between civic duty and small-scale logistics outsourcing. But if what you really want is a "cheap as chips" solution, you can usually rent a skip from a local firm - particularly in smaller towns - for less. You’ll, of course, get what you pay for. Which in some cases may be a skip left half-on your driveway with a note that just reads "Steve knows."

HIPPO is cleaner, simpler and more reliable than most of its competitors, with a customer service team that actually responds to calls (you can try it yourself: 0333 999 0 999). But it’s not miracle-working - just solid, consistent waste collection in the least self-congratulatory way possible. Like a decent kettle or a well-aligned garden hose: boringly efficient, and never a bad idea.

Discounts, But Don’t Let Them Collect Dust

The 'MAY20' promo gives 20% off bag + collection packages (sorry, not valid on standalone bags), which makes now as good a time as any to finally tackle the leaning tower of MDF in the garage. Just don’t buy a HIPPOBAG, forget about it for two years, then wonder why the label faded in the sun. They won’t take back a disintegrating relic and call it "unused." Fair enough.

Rubbish removal isn’t particularly thrilling. But neither is back pain or that rising sense of defeat mostly fuelled by garden clippings. HIPPO isn’t waving a wand - they’re turning up on time, lifting things carefully, and knowing the difference between plasterboard and gypsum. That’s more than most of us can say at 9am on a Saturday.
