Filtering the Fantasy

Holidaylettings, like many legacy listing platforms, trades in choice - too much of it, some might say. You can scroll through sun-drenched villas in Marbella, then ricochet to a cottage in Anglesey that looks like something out of a coastal murder mystery. The filters help, but there’s a certain mental fatigue that sets in somewhere between "pet-friendly" and "internet included."

Still, it beats the roulette wheel of social media travel recommendations. At least here the prices are real, if not always reasonable, and there’s a contact number if something goes wrong. That alone is worth something - or at least worth less swearing during check-in.

These are mostly lesser-booked properties with time slots to fill - perfect for procrastinators or those with the rare ability to pack on instinct. Some properties shave off up to 30 percent, though don’t count on such generosity in high season or in hotspots (looking at you, Lake Como).

Voucher codes float around occasionally - mostly emailed to registered users or tied to specific campaigns. Worth signing up for the newsletter if only to delete it later with confidence. Holidaylettings doesn’t bombard you, but nor are they regularly generous. Think sensible British politeness, not exuberant brand largesse.

Worth It?

In the right hands, Holidaylettings is a useful tool. You won’t always get a bargain, but you can usually avoid being gouged. The platform’s user experience is nothing revolutionary, but it doesn’t insult your intelligence either, which puts it ahead of many competitors. Reviews tend to skew helpful rather than hysterical. Navigation is linear and legible. It feels like a website made for grownups - which is increasingly rare.

There are curveballs, of course. One host listed a "fully equipped" villa that turned out to lack cutlery but did have a telescope. Another claimed the Wi-Fi was "fast enough for business," which is technically true if your business is picking fruit or writing longhand letters.

All that said, with a little wariness and a discount code, it’s possible to book a reasonably nice stay with Holidaylettings and not feel like you’ve been tricked into funding someone else’s DIY house flip. Just try not to let the search for value overshadow the actual trip. A slightly overpriced villa can still be worth it if the kettle works and no one brings a guitar.
