About Fernando

Fernando Da Cruz Vasconcellos heads Coller IP's IP Valuation department. Fernando is an experienced consultant, and he has worked with a wide range of clients, from start-up companies to multinationals. His experience with IP valuation includes working with clients on due diligence, strategic management and investor positioning, and valuing intangible assets, including technology, patents, brands, software, trademarks and copyright materials.

Fernando has over 16 years of professional experience in the design, execution and management of projects in the technology and healthcare fields, in the UK, US and Brazil. Fernando also has experience with the development of technology, devising business strategies, and actively selling to generate new business.

Prior to joining Coller IP, Fernando was a Senior Teaching Fellow at the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sensor Technologies and Applications (Sensor CDT) at the University of Cambridge. As a core member of the management team, he was responsible for setting up, managing and delivering a new multidisciplinary Sensor CDT Programme, where he lectured and actively consulted with industrial partners and worked on academic-industrial collaboration research projects involving IP. Fernando was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge from 2013-2016, where he conducted research on medical devices, sensors, imaging, and data analysis for point-of-care diagnostics and healthcare applications. As Teaching Fellow, Facilitator and Mentor, Fernando has also designed and led the delivery of a graduate level Emerging Technologies (MRes ETECH) for the Centre of Entrepreneurial Learning Centre at Cambridge Judge Business School. Fernando is currently the Academic Programme Director of the Cambridge Judge Business School Executive Education - FACAMP University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Programme.

Fernando has broad international research and industry experience, and he has been part of the founding team and director of two technology start-up companies, where he led the companies’ consultancy services, finances, strategy and business development. Most recently, Fernando co-founded a life sciences consultancy company in Cambridge, where he was Chief Financial Officer. Fernando has also held posts as a consultant for multiple companies and as a project engineer, for Baxter Healthcare Corporation – Bioscience Division.

Fernando has published 17 peer-reviewed articles and 2 book chapters. He has been a visiting lecturer and mentor for the MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise at the University of Cambridge, where he advised on technical feasibility business projects involving IP.

Fernando holds a BSc degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California-Santa Barbara. From the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), he received an MSc and a PhD degree, in a joint programme with MIT, in Chemical Engineering. Fernando is a chartered engineer and a member of the European Intellectual Property Teachers’ Network (EIPTN) that fosters the exchange of ideas on best practice and learning activities relating to intellectual property.
