National Car Rental: A Reliable Workhorse with Glossy Marketing
If you’ve ever flown into a major airport, stood under the hum of fluorescent lights at the rental terminal, and scanned the horizon for a familiar logo - there’s a decent chance it was National’s signature green bar. For decades, National Car Rental has staked its claim as the quietly competent choice for vehicle hire. Founded in 1947 by 24 independent operators looking to pool resources, the company has since stretched across more than 85 countries. A modest operation gone multinational - but not without baggage.
The Business Traveller’s Brand of Choice
National’s bread and butter has long been the business traveller. The company was one of the first to popularize loyalty-based rental models, launching its "Emerald Club" back in 1987 - nearly a decade before most consumers had heard the term "customer experience." This pointed focus on expedience lives on in the company’s pitch: bypass the counter, pick your car, and go. For frequent renters with little appetite for paperwork or upselling, that familiarity may count for something.
"Business travellers don’t need surprises," says travel policy consultant Ayesha Malik. "They want certainty, and National delivers more or less that. Not fanfare - just the car."
This utilitarian appeal has made National a favorite for corporate accounts. The branding - respectable, unflashy, and built for speed - is deliberate. The company sits under the sprawling Enterprise Holdings umbrella, along with Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Alamo. Practically speaking, they share the same fleet.
Cars That Are Presentable, If Not Aspirational

If you’re looking for a hyper-customised vehicle selection, you won’t find it here. National’s offerings are updated regularly - think mid-size sedans, SUVs that haven’t yet been scratched by toddlers, and the occasional Ford Mustang convertible if you’re lucky or have status. The cars are, in a word, fine.
Online reviews routinely praise the condition of vehicles: clean, new-ish, low mileage. Which, in the car hire world, passes for above-average. The options suit most demographics, and little is left to risk. "They maintain a consistent standard, which is what you want when you're landing in an unfamiliar city at 11 p.m.," says Malik. "Consistency, not flair, is what makes customers return."
Still, there are limits to how much variety is offered. National won’t be the place to find an electric Volvo or a car that makes a statement about sustainability - unless you count the quiet guilt of tracking one's carbon footprint after picking up a full-size SUV in Dallas.
Affordability - or at Least the Illusion of It
National does throw intermittent discounts toward students and NHS staff in the UK - though few seem widely promoted. A promo code buried on page three of the website promises "up to 10% off" for students. NHS workers get similar treatment, though whether customers discover these offers is often left to chance or aggressive Googling.
"They do these offers more as a nod to goodwill than a serious pricing strategy," says Louise Allen, a pricing strategist in the travel sector. "The assumption is: if you're already comparing offers, you're price-sensitive, and in that case, they’ve already budgeted for that scenario."
The fees and insurances often add up - sometimes stealthily. Drop-off charges, upcharges for additional drivers, and insurance coverage overlays tend to bloat the final price. This transparency-through-obscurity pricing model is hardly unique to National, but it certainly diminishes that initial sense of affordability.

Customer Service: Eye Contact and Efficiency
In an industry plagued by endless phone trees and indifference, National’s customer service deserves credit. The company has invested in streamlining the rental experience - particularly through its Emerald Counter Service, which lets repeat customers select any car in a given class and drive off with minimal interference.
Critics might observe that service quality often varies by location - a result of franchise-operated outlets across regions. Still, the centralised training seems to hold: staff are, generally, efficient, polite, and give the impression they’ve dealt with travellers in worse moods.
A 2022 JD Power ranking on car rental satisfaction placed National near the top for the North American market, where wait times and check-in efficiency matter. Anecdotally, users say they're rarely pushed to buy extra insurance, which might be the closest thing to a miracle in the car rental world.
A Carefully Maintained Image - But Still, Just a Rental Company
Underneath its polish, National plays a careful game. Its offers feel generous only when seen in isolation. Its customer experience appears seamless when compared to more chaotic competitors. And its vehicles shine brightest in environments where expectations are low - say, an airport garage at midnight.
That’s not to say the company’s not doing its job. On most counts, it is. It just happens to do it with a corporate efficiency that feels both competent and devoid of personality. And that might be the point.
"National is the nice blazer of car rentals," Allen says. "Not exciting, not cheap, but it gets the job done - and no one gets fired for choosing it."
