There comes a moment - usually when standing at a traffic light in a reflective vest - when even the most loyal cyclist starts wondering whether their bike is still pulling its weight. Gears complain, the saddle once described as "ergonomic" now feels like a medieval punishment device, and that discount helmet you panic-bought in 2017 just doesn’t scream confidence. Still, if you’re commuting, trying to keep one leg in the Lycra lifestyle, or just pretending those gravel trails don’t scare you, replacing your rig doesn’t have to be financially ruinous. Especially not with Planet X’s latest selection of discounts, vouchers, trade-ins, and, yes, just-barely-post-season sales.

Up to 40% Off via Cycle to Work

Let’s start with the sensible bit: Planet X supports the Cycle to Work scheme, which lets UK-based salaried employees lease a bike (and gear) tax-free via their employer. This can mean a saving of up to 40%. It’s not a new idea - the programme’s been around since 1999 - but it’s an easy way to make a new road, gravel, or e-bike less financially destabilising. Even if you don’t end up using it to commute. Technically nobody will check. We won’t tell.

Carbon Wheels for Less (If That’s Your Thing)

For those still chasing watts or, more realistically, Instagram kudos, Planet X is offering £100 off carbon wheel upgrades on all road bikes. Prices start at £250 - not quite pennies, but less offensive than usual for carbon. Unless you consider spending half a grand to marginally reduce rotational weight in exchange for more complicated braking an odd personality trait. Which it is. But we understand the impulse.

Ex-Demo and Clearance: Practical, Unflashy, Reluctantly Good Value

Planet X also runs a surprisingly decent "Ex-Demo & Clearance" section - a refreshingly blunt description. These are the bikes that have seen things. Maybe they’ve been test ridden. Maybe they spent three weeks as showroom eye candy. Either way, they come with markdowns that make the odd scuff forgivable. If you have a high tolerance for slightly off-spec paint jobs or low-mileage optimism, it’s worth browsing.

Under £20: The Tiny Joys of Bike Accessorising

For an industry that often seems determined to charge six digits for anything carbon-adjacent, the "Under £20" bin presents a surprising amount of rationality. No one needs fluorescent brake cover socks - and yet, the Muc-Off Disc Brake Covers (£14.39, down from £17.99) somehow make sense. The same goes for a very waterproof-looking handlebar barrel bag from PODSACS (£9.99), which promises to keep your snacks and existential dread dry on long rides. Practical. Not profound. But helpful.

Trade-In: The Planet X-Change

This is where things get slightly more philosophical. Through the "Planet X-Change" programme, you can trade in your old bike and get something closer to modern. The process is not wildly different from a phone trade-in, only with more chain grease and fewer biometric sensors. It does what it says, with minimal retail theatre. Just don’t expect them to pretend your 2012 MTB is "vintage" - the team here has seen it all. So have you. That’s why you're reading this.

Also Notable (Barely)

There’s a mix of 0% finance options (including Newpay) if you’d rather spread the cost of your regret. A 30-day ride guarantee gives you time to realise the mountain bike you bought while watching the Tour de France is not, in fact, built for commuter traffic in Croydon. Several jerseys and sunglasses are on sale. Most are respectable. One or two border on "guy in a local band" energy but still perform respectably in foul weather.

The Bottom Line

Planet X doesn't promise miracles. It does, however, manage to avoid many of the more performative aspects of online bike sales. No sycophantic copywriting. No inflated MSRPs marked down to "deals" your wallet doesn’t believe. Just functional markdowns, solid if utilitarian kit, and a decent sense that someone in Rotherham is trying to keep you on two wheels without needing to sell your car or your integrity. Briefly refreshing.
