Prep Kitchen says it can solve that - offering nutritionally balanced, high-protein meals with zero prep. It's pitched as the answer to fitness-focused eating for people who haven’t learned to sous-vide a chicken breast or decipher calorie apps. Naturally, we were intrigued. Cautiously.
Prep Kitchen is a UK-based meal delivery service aiming itself squarely at two camps: those trying to lose fat and those trying to gain muscle - with the tacit understanding that most of us are floundering somewhere in between. Each meal boasts 40+ grams of protein, pre-cooked, chilled, and ready to microwave in three minutes. And to its credit, Prep Kitchen does exactly that. Our test meals arrived on time, packed responsibly, and survived the week in the fridge without chemical aftertastes or soggy betrayal.
The range includes dishes like Korean BBQ beef, Thai-spiced salmon, and chicken with tzatziki quinoa, many of which tasted - at minimum - fine. Occasionally very good. Some meats are surprisingly tender; the grains usually maintain texture; and flavours are punchy without screaming. The spice levels are calibrated for broad appeal: present enough to pretend you were brave, not enough to actually matter.
It’s clear the menu was built with macros in mind first, and Michelin stars second. That’s not a criticism, just a truth of the category. This is food designed to fit your needs, not your Instagram grid.
Two main plans are on offer: fat loss and muscle gain. The former starts at £6.25 per meal, the latter at £7.50. Pricing varies depending on the number of meals per week you opt for - though given that gym memberships and protein supplements often cost more while doing less, it’s reasonably aligned with the economics of eating like you care.
If it all sounds a bit too well-oiled, a few mild cautions: The variety is impressive for about four weeks, then the rotational menu starts to feel like a well-rehearsed playlist. The meals freeze well, but taste "less fresh" in a way that's difficult to define and easy to notice. And though portioning is filling for most, we occasionally found ourselves raiding the peanut butter jar 90 minutes later. Perhaps we’re weak. Or human.
There’s a clear value to the convenience - especially for anyone tracking macros. The brand claims 53 fitness professionals eat their meals regularly. That could be true. It could also be the same 12 fitness professionals repeatedly photographed. Hard to say. But the meals do deliver on protein, convenience, and relative taste better than most of its peers. There's no magical thinking here, and thankfully no "detox" language either.
Prep Kitchen succeeds not by transforming how you eat, but by lowering the daily energy tax of eating like someone who exercises. Are they the best meals you’ll ever have? No. But they probably beat the third wrap in a row from Pret, and they require less emotional labour than Sunday night meal prep.
