By now, we've all internalized the idea that urban mobility is trending "smaller, smarter, and more sustainable" - which is mostly just a nice way of saying congestion's making us all a little bit unhinged. So whether you’re dodging London traffic or attempting to make the school run less apocalyptic, the idea of a compact, electric assist bicycle starts to feel less like a lifestyle choice and more like a daily act of survival. Enter: the Raleigh Modum, a full-powered compact e-bike designed for people with neither time nor patience for a sprawling frame, a gym membership, nor a conversation about cadence-to-torque ratios.

What is the Raleigh Modum?

Technically speaking, it’s a full-fat e-bike, shrunk down and streamlined. The Modum is Raleigh’s latest attempt to combine the practicality of a mid-tier cargo hauler with the nimbleness of a city commuter. It doesn’t fold, but then again, not everything should. Instead, it embraces its form factor unapologetically: small, sturdy, and not fussed about looking particularly design-y. If Apple made a bike, this wouldn’t be it - and that’s not a bad thing.

How it Rides

Thanks to its Bosch Performance Line motor and 500Wh PowerPack battery, the Modum punches well above its weight class. It’s quick off the line, holds its own on hills, and quietly eradicates the "but I’ll be too sweaty" excuse. The ride is reassuringly solid, with enough give in the frame to absorb the worst of British road maintenance. Cornering isn’t exactly Formula 1, but it’s predictable and stable. Which frankly is what you want while navigating between a bin lorry and a parked Uber Eats moped.

Design: Functional over Flashy

Let’s call it "purposeful minimalism." The Modum won’t win any awards for aesthetic daring, but at least it doesn't try too hard. With smaller 20" wheels, integrated lights, and a built-in rear rack, it makes just enough of a statement - mostly: I value function over flair, and also I haven’t got time to lock up a full-sized bike. The low-step frame makes it accessible, though the saddle isn't what you'd call plush. Then again, neither are most commutes.

Price and Offers

At £2,199 RRP, the Modum lands in the mid-to-premium range of e-bikes, which puts it squarely in the "considered purchase" category. Raleigh’s own site plays it cool - but worth noting: finance is available through Klarna from around £55/month. There are no formal discounts at the moment, though stockists occasionally offer bundle deals (helmet, lock, smug sense of superiority).

Delivery is free anywhere in the UK, and all bikes are pre-assembled by Cytech-trained mechanics. You’ll need to bolt on a few bits yourself - pedals, baskets, dignity - but Raleigh includes clear instructions. DX handles the actual delivery, and you’ll get a tracking number to follow your new companion’s journey from warehouse to doorstep. Returns are available within 14 days, assuming the bike hasn’t been ridden extensively. No jumping curbs, then deciding you’d rather keep the money.

Who It's For

Realistically, the Modum suits the "don’t want to be that person on a scooter" crowd - urbanites, flat-dwellers, and anyone tired of the Tube but still uninterested in Lycra. Its compact dimensions make it a solid fit for small storage spaces, but it’s not featherlight: at around 25kg, it demands a certain physical buy-in for lifting up stairs or onto trains. If you’re on the smaller side (or less inclined toward hauling things about), worth factoring in.

The Bottom Line

Raleigh’s Modum is quietly competent, which is not to be underestimated. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but it does make pedalling them considerably easier. The power is there, the size is city-friendly, and the brand support - manuals, videos, and tolerably pleasant customer service - is reassuring. Is it cool? Not really. But it's the kind of uncool that knows where your keys are, turns up on time, and tells you when your tyre pressure’s low. Which is probably cooler, in the long run.

Available now from Raleigh’s official site with free UK delivery and optional Klarna financing.
