Start Rescue’s plans range from basic domestic roadside assistance to full-fledged European cover. There are motorcycle options, too, making it one of the more inclusive breakdown providers in the UK. The company’s pricing undercuts some of the major competitors, and it frequently runs promotions - sometimes throwing in "bonus" perks like free vehicle health checks or MOT discounts.

The company also makes a show of catering to specific groups. NHS staff and other key workers (two words that have taken on new meaning since 2020) are eligible for discounts, presumably as a nod to their indispensable role in society. Students, meanwhile, are offered budget-friendly packages - though precisely what makes them uniquely suited to cash-strapped undergrads isn’t particularly clear. Still, an appealing promise when the alternative is watching your car wheeze to a halt and realising your bank balance offers little hope of assistance.

Start Rescue claims a 24/7 helpline staffed by "friendly, clued-up" professionals, as well as a widespread network of recovery agents across the UK. All of which sounds great - if somewhat standard for the industry. The real test, of course, is what happens when you actually break down.

Reviews are generally positive, with customers commending prompt callout times and straightforward service. But, as with any budget provider, there are occasional reports of slow responses, limited coverage in rural areas, and the small print catching drivers off guard. Some policies, for example, won’t cover you if you haven’t serviced your car regularly - something easily overlooked until you’re on the phone with a breakdown agent explaining that, no, you haven’t checked your tyre tread depth in the last six months.

So, Is It Worth It?

Start Rescue presents itself as a plucky alternative to the big names, and for the most part, it delivers on affordability. The coverage options are varied, promotions are frequent, and if you’re looking for basic, no-frills breakdown assistance, it could well be a smart choice.

That said, the balance between price and service is always delicate. If you break down 50 miles from home at 2 AM, that’s when you’ll truly know if the savings were worth it.

Start Rescue won’t make your breakdown any less annoying - but if it gets you off the road and back home without a financial sucker punch, then perhaps that’s enough.
