TalkTalk wants your broadband business. And if affordability is your top priority, they make a compelling case. But like most low-cost providers, their deals come with fine print, trade-offs, and a fair amount of "you get what you pay for."

For those wanting more than just broadband, TalkTalk throws in TV bundles, unlimited home phone services, and the occasional promotional perk. They comply with Ofcom’s speed code of practice, meaning advertised speeds should reflect real-world performance. How often they hit those speeds, however, is another matter.

The Hardware: A Wi-Fi Hub With Limits

Every TalkTalk package comes with the company’s Wi-Fi Hub, a fairly standard router with enough ports to keep most homes connected. Need better coverage? You can invest in Wi-Fi extenders - particularly useful if your perfectly positioned router still can't reach the upstairs study.

Budget-conscious customers can opt for TalkTalk’s basic broadband options, topping out at around 145Mbps. If you bundle broadband with other services, the company sweetens the deal with discounts and "security" add-ons like HomeSafe and parental controls. Because who doesn’t love being upsold some digital peace of mind?

Customer Support: A Work in Progress

TalkTalk’s affordability extends to its phone packages, which include unlimited UK calls and international calling options. They also offer SuperSafe protection for devices - essentially repackaged security software that you could get elsewhere. Pricing is predictable, often undercutting premium providers, though cost-cutting is evident in certain areas.

Customer service, for example, is hit or miss. TalkTalk describes itself as transparent about reliability and user experience. Reviews suggest otherwise. While some customers have smooth experiences, others report slow issue resolution and unhelpful support - a common grievance among budget ISPs.

Installation is usually quick (one to two weeks), but if you need a new landline, expect to pay £60. This isn’t hidden - it’s just another cost that makes the initial price tag look more attractive than the total outlay.

Cheap for a Reason

TalkTalk’s pitch is simple: low prices, functional broadband, and bundled extras if you’re interested. But value depends on what you’re willing to trade off. If cost is king and you’re happy with a no-frills service, TalkTalk does the job. If reliability, seamless customer service, and top-tier speeds matter, you might want to look elsewhere.
