Hotel loyalty in London can be a fickle thing. Between the budget sleepboxes, the heritage behemoths, and the design-led boutique spots obsessing over Edison bulbs and scented diffusers, it’s easy to wonder where exactly one is meant to exhale. The Clermont Hotels - with locations in Victoria and Charing Cross - would like to be the answer to that question. They're aiming for a steady middle: comfort you don't have to think about, a bit of polish, and a location that's within striking distance of a double-decker full of tourists or a discreet business lunch. That’s the pitch. But what do you actually get?
The Clermont Charing Cross and Victoria: Locations That Market Themselves
Position is the Clermont’s strongest card. A few steps from Trafalgar Square or a casual stroll to Buckingham Palace, depending on which of the two you're booked into. If geography is everything, then this is an address with a winning postcode. For visitors trying to balance a museum crawl with a pre-theatre dinner and a late-night gin, it's hard to ask for more than a solid bed mere minutes from the mayhem.
The rooms themselves don’t scream design revolution. Think well-kept classic styling and an effort at modern comfort. Plugs are where you'd hope them to be, Wi-Fi exists (not always a given at London hotels that claim historic charm), and the beds are - happily - as forgiving as they look. No weird lighting controls or perfumed room spray trying to tell you who you are. It’s a space to put your bag down, get changed, and open a laptop without confusion. This, for many of us, is more luxury than it sounds.
Offers and Perks, Minus the Sparkle
The Clermont does have deals, although calling them "unmissable" would be overstating the case. The "10% off today, tomorrow, forever" benefit for signing up to their member system is about standard, but useful if you’re the kind of traveller who likes repetition. Book direct and you get a slight rate reduction and, more interestingly, a few bonus perks (subject to the usual fine print vagueness).
The Victoria & Albert Museum Package is practical: you stay nearby and get a complimentary ticket to a paid exhibition. Is this going to change your life? No. Is it an efficient way to cosplay as a cultured person for 36 hours? Arguably.
There’s also a wedding package at the Victoria location if you’re looking for a blend of Georgian arches and central heating on your big day. Romantic without being cloying, at least in the brochure.
Meeting Spaces and Marginal Gains
For those booking boardrooms and event spaces, the Clermont caters to what it calls "making business a pleasure". Bold. In reality, it’s about clean, functional rooms with the expected AV kit and enough coffee to fuel a property analyst conference. It won’t out-innovate a coworking startup lounge, but then you probably weren’t looking for free beanbags anyway.
Breakfast Without the Hashtags
There’s little Instagram theatre going on in the breakfast room, which could be a mercy. It’s more full-English than floral smoothie bowl, and you’ll likely come away full, if not transformed. Dining options are competent rather than thrilling - decent spots for a nightcap or before-the-show bite if you can’t be bothered to brave the West End restaurant roulette. You’re not here to discover the next Ottolenghi. You’re here to sit down, be served, and not worry about what "fermented pickles" actually means.
