There are adult human beings out there who put more effort into managing their pet’s diet than their own. You might be one of them. You’ve sacrificed boot space to store a 15kg bag of grain-free hypoallergenic kibble, installed an automatic feeder more advanced than your coffee machine, and subscribed to a treat box tailored to your dog’s gut microbiome. This isn’t a judgment. It’s just where we are now. And at some point, whether you’re dealing with arthritis in a retired greyhound or yet another urinary tract infection in a surly tabby, you’ve likely realised you need pet meds - which means you’ll also need a place that sells them without charging you the equivalent of a Michelin-star tasting menu. Enter: VioVet.
Traditional vets are invaluable, of course - part medical expert, part therapist, part hostage negotiator when it’s time for your cat’s pill. But they’re not known for offering competitive retail prices. Buying long-term medications directly from your practice can quickly feel like joining a subscription service you didn’t ask for. That’s where online retailers like VioVet come in: a way to fill prescriptions without refinancing your living room furniture.
Based in Bedfordshire and running since 2006, VioVet is a registered UK veterinary retailer with all the usual qualifications, premises numbers, and long-winded regulatory disclaimers that reassure you you’re not buying knock-off antibiotics from an anonymous warehouse in a desert. They stock prescription meds, supplements, food, toys, and enough joint care products to make you reconsider the state of your own knees. The selection is broad - Hill's, Royal Canin, NAF, Orijen, Purina, and other brands that wouldn't seem out of place in a Waitrose for dogs.
VioVet’s website won’t win any beauty prizes. The design sits somewhere between a pharmacy and a mid-2000s electronics store. But it’s functional. Search is fast, categories are clear, and - most importantly - the prescription upload tool isn’t a painful chore. You’ll need a valid prescription from your vet (they’ve helpfully posted a how-to guide if this process is new to you), and once uploaded, the approval time usually runs 1–2 business days. Not lightning-fast, but tolerably efficient.
Shipping is free for orders over £35 - a bar most pet owners will reach by simply keeping their animals alive. Under that, delivery typically starts at around £2.99. Orders tend to arrive in a couple of days, sometimes sooner. There’s nothing Amazon Prime-ish about it, but it does the job. Returns are accepted within 14 days, though - unsurprisingly - you can’t return opened meds. Not unless you want to end up on the wrong kind of list.
While the homepage includes a link to "Special Offers", don’t expect the digital equivalent of a Boxing Day stampede. Discounts are usually modest, but they tend to be on the things you actually buy: Royal Canin breed-specific dry food, frontline flea treatments, digestive supplements from Protexin, that kind of thing. Seasonal clearance items are occasionally interesting - think mislabelled food bags or end-of-line pet coats - but won’t thrill anyone unless they’re already doomscrolling through the site at 11pm.
Vouchers and codes do pop up intermittently, especially via email if you sign up for the newsletter (though you’ll also get a steady stream of "stocking fillers for your horse" emails, so weigh up your tolerance). Purchases occasionally qualify for multi-buy discounts (buy three, save 10%, etc). Most of the compelling financial advantage lies in the consistency: vet-level brands at marginally lower prices. It's not exciting. That’s why it works.
VioVet doesn’t promise revolution. It promises practicality - and generally delivers on it. It’s where your vet might get their stock, if your vet were more price-conscious. It won’t replace a professional diagnosis or the ability to read your dog’s subtle body language like a fluent translator of tail wags. But once you’ve got the diagnosis, this is a place to get the follow-up care without melting your credit card.
As for flaws: yes, the site could use a refresh, and the checkout process still feels like entering a council tax portal. But the consistency, pricing transparency, and quiet competence of the operation suggest a company not trying to seduce its customers so much as retain them. Sometimes that’s all you need - a place that sells glucosamine chews, delivers them on time, and doesn’t ask why your cat needs hypoallergenic mousse again. Or why you do.
