Somewhere between the optimism of a warm Bank Holiday weekend and the creeping dread of assembling flat-packed furniture lies Britain’s seasonal obsession: garden makeovers. It's that special time of year when we collectively remember that we have outdoor space and briefly believe that a few pieces of rattan and a potted palm can turn it into the Riviera. Or at least the bit of Majorca your aunt visited once. Unsurprisingly, deals flood in accordingly - with prices dropping as fast as expectations for British sunshine. Cue the 9-Seater Rattan Garden Furniture Set with Fire Pit from Fimous, currently dangling 66% off its supposed £2,952.01 RRP (yours for £999), which frankly calls to mind how much everyone marks up garden furniture in the offseason.
To its credit, this Fimous set does check the technical boxes: UV-resistant polyrattan weave, thick cushions, a built-in fire pit, and seating for nine people you may or may not want to sit with. Available in the always-reassuring "Mixed Grey", it seems squarely aimed at buyers looking to kit out the garden quickly - and at a price point just low enough to make the effort of entertaining seem slightly more palatable. Depending on how sociable you're feeling, nine chairs can feel like an opportunity or an obligation.
The included table features an integrated gas fire pit, which is either a charming centrepiece or a mild safety concern, depending on what’s being served and who’s been serving it. Still, it’s a nice touch for those evenings when "British summer" turns out to be 14°C and windy. While technically weatherproof, you'll want to store the cushions or risk that archetypal wet-sponge sensation mid-barbecue. And no, covers aren’t included by default - you’ll have to tick that box yourself for an extra cost.
At £999, it’s no impulse buy, but it is a significant markdown from the eyebrow-raising £2,952 list price (which, for context, is roughly the cost of a small used car or a prohibitive amount of oat milk lattes). The discount certainly makes it more competitive alongside similarly-sized sets on the market, though savvy shoppers will note that these kinds of markdowns are rarely as breathless as they seem - especially in the height of "garden deal season". RRP inflation is a real thing, and garden furniture, in particular, plays fast and loose with original pricing.
Delivery isn't included in the advertised price - it’s a separate £46.99 postage and packaging fee, which feels like a mild sting after you’ve already parted with a grand. Expect a delivery window of 5–10 working days (an ambiguous phrase retailers use that can mean anything from "right away" to "sometime this month if you're lucky"). Refunds and returns are accepted but, predictably, all items must be unused and in the original packaging - should you decide that the fire pit looked better in theory.
Overall, this is a substantial, relatively affordable way to upgrade your outdoor entertaining game, provided you're willing to accept a few trade-offs. The quality seems solid enough for the price - polyrattan won’t win any awards for craftsmanship, but it's durable, and the aesthetic treads the fine line between "modern minimalist" and "high-end Airbnb". Realistically, if you’re buying garden furniture online from a deal site, your expectations should already factor in a bit of assembly, some weather paranoia, and the possibility that at least one of your guests will spill rosé on the cushions within ten minutes.
Still, at two-thirds off, it’s hard to argue too much. Just don’t be surprised if, six months from now, you’re Googling "can you spray paint rattan furniture?" after weather and time have left it looking a touch… lived-in.
